The Captain's 5K was established in honor and memory of Bro. Jerome J. Kirkland Sr., affectionately known as “Capt Kirk” by his Omega Psi Phi Fraternity brothers.
A Vietnam War combat veteran (SSgt, USA), Jerome was born in Camden, NJ (May 7, 1944) and spent much of his life in Newnan, GA. He served as a City Councilman and Board of Education member in Plainfield, NJ; educator and coach in DeKalb County Schools, GA; Parish Council Chairman at Newnan Chapel UMC; and Elder and Leader of the Thrive Ministry at GO Church in Sharpsburg, GA. Jerome was a founding father and charter member of the Theta Lambda Lambda (TLL) Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., serving Coweta and Fayette counties.
His leadership inspired the chapter to award over $400,000 in scholarships to college-bound students; sponsor blood drives and community health initiatives; support Relay for Life; and establish mentoring programs and numerous other service efforts.
I appreciate the men of Omega Psi Phi for caring about the health of the community.

The Thomas “T.J.” Jefferson Foundation Inc. (TJF) is a 501(c)(3) charitable organization. Established in September 2003, the foundation has raised funds and distributed more than $400,000 in scholarships to deserving high school seniors and college bound students who demonstrated high academic excellence in Coweta and Fayette County, GA. This has only been possible because of the support of community partners like you. In honor of Jerome Kirkland Sr, we aim to utilize “The Captains 5K” as an opportunity to further raise awareness of Men’s Health issues, Prostate Cancer and support our scholarship program for deserving students in the community.
